Very Common, Very Bad Ideas for Your Job Hunt

Very few people like looking for jobs. To most it’s stressful and annoying. A job hunt is usually taken up when you’re pushed into a bad place. This isn’t how it should be. You should always be looking out for your next opportunity, but we get it. So, to reduce the discomfort of finding a new job you thought you could come up with some shortcuts, maybe you even call them efficiencies? Here are the top 3 “shortcuts” that are guaranteed to make you spend over double the time fixing the mistakes they inevitably create.

1.Leverage Social Media by telling everyone “Help! I need a job.” OK, there are ways you can “leverage social media” that make a lot of sense. But you can’t just use it to broadcast the message that you need a job. That never looks very good for starters. Use social media for company research and to connect with people. Use it to schedule information-gathering interviews, but be very specific with it. Don’t expect social media to find you a job.
2.Details are for losers. Just about anywhere you apply there’s going to be some sort of instructions that are unique. You have to pay very close attention to these details. Consider them the first hurdle you have to leap to prove you care. If you don’t get the job because it’s a bad fit that’s fine, but don’t get denied a job because you weren’t paying attention to details in the process.
3.Cookie-cutter Resume. It’s amazing how many people don’t understand what a resume is. It’s not a list of things you’ve done. It’s a marketing tool that tells companies they should hire you. Yes, you need to be honest on it, but remember why the document exists and make it thrive.

Most people on job hunts just want it all to be over. To arrive. But you have to be patient and take your time getting there. Otherwise you won’t get anywhere, or where you get will be no better than where you were. Take special care writing your resume, getting the word out and following all the nitty steps you have to follow to land the dream job. It’s not easy, but it’s not supposed to be.
