The Video Resume in Five Steps

People are starting to notice that a video resume can give a real edge. Of course it has to be done right. It doesn’t need to be a spotless production, but it has to convey your value. Here are some things to consider when making yours.

1.Choose the right format.

You can have someone interview you or speak directly into the camera, whichever you think will be more natural. Voiceovers are a clever approach as well.

2. Have a script but don’t read from it.

Imagine you’re having coffee with the person. Be natural but focused on conveying your message. So have a script, but don’t look like you have one.

3. Clear recording.

Make sure there’s no background noise you’re competing with and that you’re enunciating everything clearly.

4. Edit and rework.

It doesn’t have to be super polished, but get it as close as you can. The more you rework the better it will be.

5. Watch your video.

It’s a little painful for most people, but watch your video and be able to comment smartly when people ask you about it or talk about it.

A lot of people are going beyond the traditional resume now that cameras are so ubiquitous. And many say it gives an edge, unless of course it’s a poorly executed one. So follow the basic tips above if you think you’re ready for the new chapter in job hunting, and don’t forget to smile.

Stop Multitasking

Our brains just aren’t wired for multitasking, at least not the things that require brainpower. Our short-term memories can only store so much simultaneously. Yes, it’s a flaw of humanity. We really can’t do more than one thing at a time very well, and it’s hard to be good at anything if you’re not doing it well.

When information doesn’t make it into short-term memory, it can’t be transferred into long-term memory for recall later. That means if a project has a learning curve, you’re going to hit it every time if you’re not concentrating. Multitasking is making you less efficient, as well as more annoying and even dangerous (yes, you if you text and drive).

Just try it. Stop bringing your laptop to meetings and listen to what’s being said. Stop chatting with co-workers and shopping for that brushed nickel kitchen faucet while combing through your spreadsheet. Do one thing at a time and build those concentration muscles. That’s how you get good at stuff.

So You Wanna Work from Home?

Lots of people are working from home. It just makes a lot of sense. A lot of companies care more about your work product than about having you sit in their office every day. But if you’re going to take the plunge, there are skills you need to be successful at it. Here are the top 5.

1. Get Organized.

You are now fully in charge of you getting stuff done on time. Maybe you’re working across different computers. This means you have to make sure you have quick access to your work and a good handle on the tools that will help you work remotely. It’s up to you to really understand how to use the project management tools like Trello and Wrike as well as the file sharing tools like Google Drive and Dropbox.

2. Communication and Diplomacy.

You can’t get mad at people if they, say, forget to put something in Dropbox for you or email you a file, especially if they’re at the office and you’re not. What they’re likely to say is that the real reason the problem occurred was because you were offsite, and you don’t want to be perceived as a problem. Communicate as much as you can, and be patient with people.

3. Time Zones.

Don’t screw up meetings by getting the time zone wrong. It’s an amatuer mistake that will cause people to quickly lose confidence in you.

4. Motivation.

You simply must be a self-starter. You can’t rely on a manager to keep you on track and in gear. It’s the price you pay for independence, and it’s totally worth it.

5. IT DIY.

As more of a lone eagle, you’ll need to solve problems on your workstation. So watch all the tutorials before you lose your internet connection.

Working from home can be great, but be honest with yourself. How much do you like chatting with people and having lunch with workmates? Maybe working in your pajamas isn’t all that great after the first week or so. But if you decide it’s for you just get the 5 aforementioned ducks in a row and you’ll do fine.

Are our Underwater Internet Cables Vulnerable to Attack?

Recently there was a report in the New York Times about “aggressive” Russian submarine activity around our underwater internet cables. What worries the Pentagon is that the Russians seem to be exploring vulnerabilities in the fiber optic cable network that controls the vast majority of the world’s voice and data. It is the heart of the internet. So should we worry about an attack on it? Well, the short answer is not too much. It’s built to take a lot.

There are 15 cables that make up this network, soon to be 16. They don’t work like a strand of xmas lights where when one bulb goes, the rest go with it. And, of course if you wipe out the Atlantic, there’s always the Pacific, and there’s satellites too. You would need a sustained and diverse attack on the cables using a lot of submarines, about 1 per cable to break the internet (Sorry, Ms. Kardashian). The people who build this infrastructure know that these cables will fail at times. Maybe from an anchor scrape or an earthquake, so they’ve built the network to withstand a lot. When one cable goes down the traffic is diverted onto a good one.

So, there’s probably better things to be afraid of. Most of the videos you’re downloading or streaming are probably hosted domestically anyway. So don’t lose any sleep over a submarine attack on our internets. We’re ready to handle those evil villains.

Eight Tips for Conducting a Job Interview

Leading an interview isn’t so hard if you’re well prepared. It’s your interviewee’s show, you just set it up, and observe. Try to gauge what your coworkers would think, and go beyond the resume to really understand the person. Really, most of the job is simply getting out of the way.

1. Think Fit.

Having the right skill set is important for your candidate, and having someone with experience is invaluable when things move quickly and you need someone ready on day 1. But don’t forget fit. Can you see this person enjoying the position and sticking around? Can you see others working well this person?

2. Be consistent with your questions across candidates.

Questions can lead in all sorts of directions, but keep a baseline for everyone. This way you can better compare them.

3. Practice.

It’s amazing how much a little practice improves your game.

4. Don’t talk too much.

Don’t fill in the awkward silences. Let the interviewee step up and audition for the spot; it’s on them to present their value and create a compelling case. It’s human nature to want to talk and help them along, but it’s better to keep this impulse in check.

5. No Trick Questions.

Be as honest as you can, avoid tricks. You need to focus on what sort of value this person is going to bring and whether or not he or she is a good fit. You can ask about industry trends or their hobbies, but trick questions are annoying.

6. Know what you can legally ask.

You can’t ask someone questions about their age, marital status, religion, ancestry, whether or not they’re planning on having children or how many children they have. Learn more here.

7. Pre-screen candidates by phone.

This will save a lot of time and headache and you avoid meeting face to face with a complete stranger.

8. Get Help from a Recruiter.

Recruiters help not only with talent but manage all the aspects of the process.

Seven Tips for a Networking Event

First of all congratulations. Deciding to go to what could be a lame or awkward event is likely going to pay off in some way. It’s better than just going home and getting absorbed by your couch. Since you’ve decided to go, here are seven quick tips to help you make the most out of it.

1. The bar is usually the place to be.

Not to slam drinks but to ease into natural interactions. As soon as someone turns from the bar, you can strike up a conversation on the sidelines of the “playing field”.

2. Set some goals.

Maybe you won’t achieve them because other opportunities presented themself. But when you set goals it keeps you focused on your objectives. You can change the gameplan, just be sure to have one.

3. Don’t be overly aggressive.

Avoid being rude when inserting yourself into conversations. No one wants to be around that person.

4. Share.

Be willing to share your contacts and information with people even if it seems like there may be no reciprocation. Call it good karma if that helps.

5. Make your story compelling.

When you talk about what you do you can lead with your title, but show some spark when you talk about things that really interest you. Be human.

6. Graceful exit.

Politely excuse yourself from conversations. No running! And leave while the place is still at least half full.

7. Thank the organizer.

The writer Malcolm Gladwell uses the term Maven for someone who is really good at connecting different people. Your organizer is likely to be one, and could be a pivotal person to know. And it’s just good form to thank them.

Get Certified and Make More Bank

You know how at Jamba Juice, you can get a boost added to your $3 drink magically making it a little more expensive? Well, you can make a similar offering to your employer. You can give your value at the company a boost by getting certified in a field relevant to your career. No matter what industry you’re in, chances are there’s a certification for it. But you’ll have to research the different types of certifications that would be considered valuable by your employer or a prospective employer. If you’re in IT, then you have a wide selection of money-making options. But that trend has spread to other industries as well.

Business Cards Just Got Cooler

Having an impressive business card can seem a little bit like a throwback. Someone foisting theirs upon you used to come off as a tad schmaltzy. Think of Lionel Hutz, the huckster lawyer on the TV show The Simpsons, whose card “turned into a sponge when you get it wet!”

Yes, the business card may have gone out of style for a while, but watch out because a really cool design firm in London called Moo is trying to bring it back. Adding some digital fangles to modernize it, of course. Just tap these cards embedded with NFC chips on your NFC-enabled device and behold the wide range of interactions that you can manage from your digital device.

The technology has gotten cheaper, but still not exactly cheap. Ranging from around $37 upwards, you’ll want to be a little selective with who you hand these out to. But if the fad takes off, expect the technology to get even cheaper. And who knows, maybe marketers will produce them en masse, and we all might be tapping paper onto our devices. Until then, you get to feel like that cool kid in the Members Only section if someone gives you one, and maybe even cooler if you have some made. Just don’t get em wet.
